What Is The Oregon Trail Game?

Throughout the 1980's and 1990's a popular computer game appeared on the Apple computer platform called Oregon Trail. Originally created for teletype computers, the game was rewritten to run on the newer computers and was picked up by schools across the country. Most people were first exposed to Oregon Trail at their school and it was widely known and discussed by school children throughout the world. Most of the games were distributed by a company called Brøderbund and The Learning Company.

How Do You Play Oregon Trail?

During starting the game you choose a profession a banker, a carpenter or a farmer. This choice influences how much money you start with and bonuses applied to your final score in the game. Being a farmer has the highest bonus multiplier at the end because you start with the least money. After choosing your profession you outfit your wagon with materials including: oxen, ammunition, food supply, wagon parts and yokes for the oxen. These can be bought and sold later. The occupants of the wagon are then created.

Playing Oregon Trail

During the game of Oregon Trail players can choose the speed that they move at. Choosing a higher travel speed can cause parts to break and your oxen to die. So caution should be taken in choosing too high of a travel speed. Other obstacles during the game include running out of food, spoiled food, Indian attacks, bad weather and criminals robbing you.

Getting Food In Oregon Trail

During the game you can hunt for food or buy it in towns. Hunting for food brings you to an arcade screen where you position your player and point his rifle as animals like rabbits and buffalo run across the screen. There are trees in your way so you may have to move around to get a clear shot. Buying food and other parts in towns becomes less appealing the farther west you travel as the prices increase.

Oregon Trail River Crossing

There are two ways to cross a river in Oregon Trail Online. You can either ford your wagon, which means strapping everything down and trying to float across the river, or you can pay a ferry. Obviously the ferry is the better choice, but costs money. Fording is very dangerous.
